Tips for staying safe online

Always run trustworthy and up-to-date antivirus software

This is essential to keep your home computer free of viruses and malware. Remember that just installing this software is not enough - you need to make sure you regularly update it! We've found a great deal for all Slingshot customers with one of the world's largest and most trusted antivirus providers. It's called ESET NOD32. All new and existing Slingshot customers can get a FREE 30-day trial of this premium product. If you decide you want to keep using it after the 30 days, it'll cost you just $5 per month through Slingshot. To sign up for your FREE trial, simply log in to My Account, then choose "MY INTERNET", and then "NOD32".

Ensure your router firmware is up to date

We will be automatically doing this for you in the coming days and you'll receive notification from us before we do so. This is a proactive step that will mean Slingshot staff can now identify a threat on a customer's account remotely and help you avoid an unnecessary security problem. What we'll be doing:

  • Updating your router firmware and setting your DNS to defaults.
  • Resetting the password on your modem to the last 6 characters of your modems' MAC address - in lower case.

If you want to opt out of this new security feature, please call us on 0800 89 2000 and we'll be happy to help.

What is firmware?

Firmware is a combination of software and hardware. It tends to be written on to computer chips (like the chips that run your modem). Ocassionally the company that produces the hardware will release a firmware update to patch any problems that they are aware of.

Make sure your passwords are difficult to crack

Password protection should be an easy security feature for everyone. Whether someone steals your laptop, tablet, or mobile phone or if they try to to get in to your home computer via the Internet, a strong password can help keep your personal data secure no matter what. You should always use passwords that are hard to guess, and hard to crack. Choose long passwords that include a mix of numbers and upper and lower case characters. It is always a good idea to change your password every few months. A great tool for helping you create complex passwords is LastPass' password generator.
