Line Filters
In most cases, yes. You need a line filter in every phone jack that is being used in your house. The only exception to this is your broadband modem. If your modem is the only thing plugged into a particular jackpoint, it does not need a line filter.
If you chose a Connection & Wiring install when you activated broadband, then you will not need any line filters! This is because you will have a separate line for broadband and home line in your house.
Line filters work by separating the low frequency and high frequency signals (voice, and data) on the same line. This means that the signals stay separate and do not interfere with each other. If you received a modem from Slingshot, a line filter will have been included.
Jackpoints
Trying different jackpoints throughout the house is a great way to identify which one's work or not, as some may be wired up incorrectly or have older wiring.
Initial Checks
Below are some checks that can be performed in order to help determine where the issue is. DSL cables are prone to interference given the nature of the cable itself, however with the right steps this interference can be eliminated or minimized allowing you to have an uninterrupted connection.
- Power: Ensure the modem and router are powered on.
- Lights: Check that the modem lights (Power, LAN, DSL) are on.
- Connections: Verify all hardware connections.
- Router Connection: Ensure the LAN port on the modem is connected to the WAN/INTERNET port on the router.
- Reset: If you pressed the reset button, reconfigure the device settings.
Wiring
- Ensure all cables are firmly connected and undamaged.
- Avoid using filters, splitters, surge protectors, or extension cables for the modem’s phone line.
- Use DSL filters on all phones if you have landline service.
Power-Cycle the Modem
- Unplug the modem’s power cord for 30 seconds.
- If using a router, unplug its power supply too.
- Plug the modem back in and wait 1-2 minutes for the lights to stabilize.
- Plug the router back in and wait another 1-2 minutes.
Telephone Cord Test
- Test the phone cable for a clear dial-tone.
- Swap the cable with one known to work well.
Line Sync Issues
- Ensure the modem’s DSL light is solid.
- Use DSL filters on all devices except the modem.
- Remove any splitters, surge protectors, or extension cords.
- Test the modem on another wall jack if needed.
Line Noise Issues
- Listen for noise on a corded phone by pressing 1.
- Unplug devices one by one to identify the noise source.
- Test at the demarcation point if necessary.
- Contact your telephone provider if the issue is external.
