xDSL Broadband all depends on the quality of your line and the distance to the chorus equipment, there are other factors as well like the quality of your computer devices and setup of the connectivity to your router which does contribute to your overall experience.
New Zealand typically connects ADSL 2+ or VDSL 2+ for home internet users.
Below is a graph which demonstrates what is theoretically possible for your copper line to download line rate you could expect for your copper connection.

All ADSL 2+ products do have an UPLOAD rate shaped to 1Mbps, however if you have been connected to Slingshot owned equipment hosted via UCLL you may achieve a higher upload rate up to 2Mbps.
The shaping of the upload is to help prioritise and manage download traffic.
When copper services start to get over 500 metres from the DSLAM we start to see the line rates decrease, ADSL 2+ has a limit of 5kms and Slingshot will not provision any Broadband service where your premise does not qualify for the service
We do take proactive steps to ensure you’re on the best copper connection available for your line and location, if you have any performance issues with your Broadband CONTACT US
Common Speed Impacts
- If you live in an area where the Chorus equipment and service leads are old, Chorus does proactively maintain copper connections to help avoid outages and degradation.
- If you have many devices connected to your modem/router in use at one, sharing the available bandwidth can reduce the delivery to one device.
- The age and available hardware resources of your internet device is very important to overall performance.
- How far away your property is from the local Exchange.
- If you're using an old modem/router, it may have out of date firmware or just unable to process a higher number of packets to all devices at one time like modern equipment can.
- Out of date software and hardware i.e. updates and firmware
- Application configuration, see forums or support pages for 3rd party applications and ensure it is configured correctly if it either doesn’t work and you have the minimum hardware specifications if the application seems sluggish
It is important to know that we do not guarantee any minimum speeds or latency on any of our Broadband plans.
