Using your own modem on our broadband network is easy, just confirm that the modem you want to use is compatible with the plan you've chosen before getting started.
If you've received a modem from your previous provider, you should simply be able to plug it in and be up and running within a few minutes - easy!
If you've purchased your own modem, you'll want to make sure it supports DHCP authentication and VLAN tagging (you can refer to the modem documentation or manufacturer if you're unsure).
Check out the relevant setup guide below for the full details, more information on specific modem compatibility, and the manual settings you might need to get online.
Please note
We won't be able to troubleshoot any issues with your particular modem (including the Wi-Fi) - there are too many out there to support them all! Try getting in touch with the manufacturer if you need a hand with your specific modem.
You can only bring your own modem if you've selected a naked plan. To setup a homeline, get in touch and we'll organise for one of our modems to be sent out.
Modem setup
Confirm your plan and use one of the following guides for the initial setup:
Setting up your own Fibre modemOnce we've confirmed that your service is live, go ahead and plug in your fibre-capable modem—you should be up and running within a few minutes! If not, you'll need to configure the modem with the settings below.
If you've received any modem from BigPipe or Skinny, or have a Fritzbox from 2Degrees or Orcon, you'll need to manually configure it regardless—it won't connect automatically.
If you have a MyRepublic modem, let us know and we'll see what we can do on our end.
Manual setup
Make sure the modem is configured with these settings:
- WAN Connection Type: DHCP (Automatic IP/Dynamic IP/IP over Ethernet)
- 802.1Q: Enabled
- VLAN ID (802.1Q): 10
- 802.1P (Priority): 0
- IP Version: IPv4 or IPv6
- MTU Size: 1492 or 1500
- NAT: Enabled
Get in touch if it doesn't work and we'll organise for one of our modems to be sent out.
Not on fibre?
Check out our other modem setup guides:
Setting up your own VDSL modemOnce we've confirmed that your service is live, go ahead and plug in your VDSL-capable modem—you should be up and running within a few minutes. If not, you'll need to configure the modem with the settings below.
If you've received any modem from MyRepublic, or have a Fritzbox from 2Degrees or Orcon, you'll need to manually configure it regardless—it won't connect automatically.
If you have a Vodafone Ultra Hub, it will not work with our VDSL service.
Manual setup
Make sure the modem is configured with these settings:
- Username: putanything@slingshot.co.nz
- Password: putanything
- Connection Type: VDSL or VDSL 2
- Interface: PTM 0
- PPP Protocol: PPPoE
- PPP Auth Type: PAP
- PCP: 0
- 802.1Q: Enabled
- VLAN ID: 10
- MTU: 1492 or 1500
- NAT: Enabled
It doesn't matter what the password or username before the email address is, as long as it isn't empty.
If that doesn't work, get in touch and we'll organise for one of our modems to be sent out.
Not on VDSL?
Check out our other modem setup guides:
Setting up your own ADSL modemOnce we've confirmed that your service is live, go ahead and plug in your ADSL-capable modem—you should be up and running within a few minutes. If not, you'll need to configure the modem with the settings below.
If you've received any modem from MyRepublic, or have a Fritzbox from 2Degrees or Orcon, you'll need to manually configure it regardless—it won't connect automatically.

- Password: putanything
- Connection Type: PPPoA
- Encapsulation: VC-MUX
- VPI: 0
- VCI: 100
- MTU: 1492 or 1500

How to enable/disable the WAN firewall for your NetComm routerTo change the WAN firewall for your NetComm router, follow these easy steps.
- First, you'll need to login to your NetComm router.
- Once you're logged in, click on Advanced Setup in the left-hand bar, and then click on WAN Service. You'll see this screen:
- You'll see the Wide Area Network (WAN) Service Setup screen. At the far right of the screen, you'll see an Edit button - click it.
- Below the MTU Size settings, you'll see a checkbox to enable/disable the firewall for your router.
- Click on the box to ensure it's ticked (which means the firewall is enabled).
- Once you've done this, click on the Apply/Save button, and that's it - you're done!
We've noticed that some customers have an incorrect "routing" set up in their NetComm router - this might cause issues browsing the 'net, so here's a reasonably simple fix that should help.
-
- First of all, you will need to log in to your routers web interface. If you're not sure on how to do this, read this article.
- Once you've logged in, you need to click on Advanced Setup in the left-hand navigation menu. This will open a list of more options - click on Routing, followed by Default Gateway.
- You'll see a screen something like this:
- There are two boxes, and you should see pppoa0 in one of these boxes. If it is in the right-hand box, please click on pppoa0 and then click the arrow that points to the left-hand box. This will move the pppoa0 to the left-hand side box.
- Once you've done this, click on the Apply/Save button in the bottom right.
- Now you will need to reboot your modem/router - you can do this by pushing the power button on the back of the modem.
- Once the modem/router is rebooted, check to see if you can browse. If you can - hooray! If not, please call our Tech Support team on 0800 89 2000 and let them know that this fix didn't work for you.
Changing the default login details for your NetComm router will help increase the security of your Internet connection by using a password that only you know. The default login details are publicly accessible information, so anything with an Internet connection can find them!
To change the login details for your NetComm router, follow these easy steps.
- First, you'll need to login to your NetComm router.
- Once you're logged in, click on Management in the left-hand bar, and then click on Access Control. You'll see this screen:
- You'll see the Access Control -- Passwords screen.
- There are fields at the bottom of the screen, allowing you to change the username and password for any of the three logins to your router. Slingshot recommends changing only the passwords, and for only the admin and support users.
- You change the details by entering:
- Username of the user you wish to modify
- The new username - leave this the same
- Old Password - by default this will be admin or the last 6 digits of the modem's MAC address
- New Password - change this to a secure password. A good password is at least 8 characters long, does not contain personal information, and includes lower and uppercase letters and numbers.
- Confirm the new password by re-entering it into the final field.
The form should look similar to this image: - Once you've entered the details, click on the Apply/Save button. You're all done - if you click on Device Info in the left-hand menu, you'll now be prompted to log in to the router with the new details.
A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique address for networked devices, based on the hardware of the device.
To find the MAC address of your NetComm router, simply turn it over! You'll see a sticker on the bottom which has the MAC address on it.The last 6 digits of this address are the password for your modem. Looking at the image below, the password to log in to the modem would be 75d55f.
Make sure that you use lower-case letters when entering the MAC details into your modem. You can manage your modem's settings by going to the Modem Interface. This is useful if you want to change your Wi-Fi's name and password, create a shared network drive or add a VPN.
If you're using your own modem, please see setting up a non-Slingshot supplied modem.
Steps to accessing Modem Web Interface
1. Identify your modem below and note the login details.

We aim to have your modem couriered prior to your broadband connection becoming active.
This means we can give you a more precise date of delivery once we have been given an installation date for your broadband.
Slingshot provides a free modem rental while you are with us on all new Fibre and VDSL connections; all you need to cover is the postage and handling of $14.95. In the unlikely event that you decide to leave Slingshot, you will have to return the Slingshot modem to us.
How do I return the modem?
A pre-paid return bag will be delivered to the address in which you had active services, and should arrive within 2 – 5 business days from the cancellation date.
Once you have received this, place the modem and cables in the bag and drop it off at your local post office (or organise for a courier to pick it up).
Can I change the delivery address?
If you would like to change the delivery address of the pre-paid return bag, simply email us with the desired address via our contact form on our website.
What if I am unable to return the modem?
If the modem is not returned, there will be a modem non-return fee of $100.00.
