What is WiFi Calling?
WiFi Calling (sometimes called VoWiFi) allows you to make and receive calls, texts, and multimedia messages anywhere in the world using a suitable WiFi connection, even if there is no mobile coverage.
As a Slingshot Mobile customer, you can use WiFi Calling (if you have a compatible device) any time that your phone is connected to a WiFi network. It’s a great option if you have dodgy mobile reception, or if you’re traveling overseas.
With no apps to download, and no logins to remember, it’s easy to get chatting — just follow the steps below to enable WiFi Calling on your phone.
Activating WiFi Calling
It's super easy to activate WiFi Calling on your device when it's supported by your model.
1. Enable WiFi Calling in device settings
Go to your phone Settings where you’ll be able to toggle WiFi Calling on. On the Samsung Galaxy devices, go to the Connections tab in your Phone Settings.
2. Connect to WiFi and get talking.
On your Samsung phone, you’ll know WiFi Calling is activated when you see a small icon of a phone with radio waves pop up in the notification bar at the top of the screen.
On your iPhone you’ll see 2degrees WiFi Calling at the top left of your screen, or on an iPhone X, these words will appear in the Control Centre (swipe down from the top right of the screen).
If you can't connect, try restarting your phone and if for any reason WiFi Calling isn’t doing what you expect, you can go back to your phone settings and turn it off.
How much does it cost to use WiFi Calling?
WiFi Calling costs depend on where you’re making the call from i.e. within New Zealand or overseas. If you’re overseas, calling charges are also based on whether you’re calling home or making a call to another country.
Using WiFi Calling in New Zealand
When you’re in New Zealand and use WiFi Calling, calls and texts come out of your Plan or Add-on as they usually do – no extra mobile charges, just extra coverage. However, WiFi Calling will use internet data and may be subject to data charges depending on how you’re connecting to WiFi.
Using WiFi Calling when you’re overseas
WiFi Calling is another great way to reduce costs when you travel or roam overseas because once your phone establishes connection to our network with WiFi Calling, the call or text is treated as if you’re located in New Zealand* if you are contacting a standard New Zealand or Aussie number.
However, if you are overseas and call or text a destination other than New Zealand or Aussie, roaming rates will apply. This includes calls or texts sent within the overseas destination you’re in.

- These terms and conditions apply in addition to our General Terms and Conditions, Mobile Terms and Conditions (Prior to 30.04.23 or Effective 01.05.23, as applicable) and any other specific terms and conditions applying to your Plan or Account with 2degrees.
- If you take up a Interest Free Option (IFO) under a IFO eligible Plan, we will allow you to repay the full price of a IFO eligible mobile device and eligible accessory (if any) in equal monthly instalments on your Slingshot Account over the period of time set out in your IFO application, with no interest charged. Your monthly IFO instalments will depend on the price of the mobile device and accessory you select at the time you sign up to the IFO.
- Your monthly IFO instalments will be added to your Bill and will be charged in addition to your Plan fee or any other charges incurred under your Slingshot Account.
- A minimum upfront payment may be required to sign up to the IFO. This amount may vary depending on the IFO eligible mobile device and accessory and the IFO eligible Plan that you choose, and may be varied by Slingshot from time to time. Slingshot will notify you of the amount of the upfront payment prior to you signing up to IFO.
- IFO is only available if you received a personalised offer from Slingshot (CallPlus Services Limited).
- We will advise customers of the available IFO eligible Plans via email. Not all Plans or Services offered by Slingshot will be eligible for a IFO.
- IFO will only be available for certain mobile devices selected by Slingshot. Slingshot reserves the right to change the mobile devices eligible for IFO at any time.
- Customers may have one IFO per eligible Plan.
- You must repay the monthly IFO instalment over the period of time set out in your IFO application, or we may suspend or cancel your Slingshot Account immediately in accordance with our General Terms and Conditions, Mobile Terms and Conditions
- If you terminate your IFO eligible Plan you must immediately pay us the balance outstanding on your IFO (if any).
- If you downgrade your IFO eligible Plan to a IFO non-eligible Plan you must immediately pay us the balance outstanding on your IFO (if any). Whether a Plan is a IFO non-eligible Plan will depend, among other things, on whether your existing IFO eligible mobile device can be added to that new Plan. This will at all times be at Slingshot’s discretion.
- If you downgrade your IFO eligible Plan to another IFO eligible Plan, your monthly IFO repayments will be carried over to the new Plan.
- The immediate repayment of the balance outstanding on your IFO triggered in accordance with clauses 10 and 11 will be in addition to any early termination charges or plan transfer charges that may be applicable to your Plan. For the avoidance of doubt the balance outstanding on your IFO will be the price of the eligible mobile device (at the time of sign up to the IFO) minus any handset subsidy, your upfront payment on the IFO and any IFO monthly repayments received by Slingshot.
- An IFO cannot be transferred between customers or a change of ownership processed. In such cases the IFO must be settled in full by the exiting customer.
- Slingshot reserves the right to review and correct the monthly IFO instalments added to your 2degrees Account. We will notify you prior to correcting any IFO amounts on your account.
